Immensely grateful to be a daughter of Singapore
It may be unfashionable but I’m shouting it out anyway – It’s good being a daughter of Singapore. It’s something to be immensely grateful for.
I had flown from the Little Red Dot to the North Eastern USA for a wedding and then a book reading in Virginia. Unexpectedly, my country offered me a launch in their Washington DC embassy, the first of my book promotion events in the USA.
I expected a subdued cosy evening, I found out they’d pulled out the works!
There was the double height reception area decked with long red banners sporting the crescent moon and five stars. There were my books, recognized as part of literary Singapore. There was the ambassador and his lovely wife with her wonderful introduction. There was everything done just right so the Embassy’s list of distinguished guests and my friends could welcome As the Heart Bones Break’s first venture into the USA.
This was one moment when I could not complain that my country did not cherish the written word, did not value culture. It was a beautiful evening. To not be thankful would be churlish.
Yes, it’s not fashionable to say but I am lucky. To be a daughter of Singapore … it’s something
The book launch was a beautiful event. It was such an honor to be there.

It was indeed lovely Janelle. I made it to Halls Lake Toronto too. It’s not exactly near where you’re at but I did get to see snow, lots of it. Now I have a small inkling of what winter must be like for you.
What an honour indeed! Congrats Aud – memories forever etched in your mind and heart.
